Exploring Pukaskwa National Park on the Manito Miikana and the Southern Headland Trails

Pukaskwa National Park, located on the northern shore of Lake Superior in Ontario, Canada, is a true wilderness paradise for hikers. One of the park’s most popular trails are the Manito Miikana Trail (“the Spirit Trail”) and the Southern Headland Trail, at approximately 2-kilometer in length each, they both take hikers through some of the most rugged and beautiful landscapes with incredible views.

Trail Start

Both trail start at the Hattie Cove campground, and the first kilometer follows a boardwalk through a forested dune section along the shoreline of Lake Superior. However, as the trails split they start to climb into rockier and rugged areas, where the terrain becomes increasingly challenging. The trails take hikers through dense forests, rocky outcrops, and along steep cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding wilderness.

One of the highlights of the Manito Miikana Trail is the hike through a rocky ravine as you climb up for panoramic views of Lake Superior and the Pic River Dunes. The Southern Headland Trail is similar as it juts into Lake Superior with views of Hattie Cove, Pulpwood Habour and Horseshoe Bay. Both trails boast a number of great spots for a picnic or a rest along the way, as well as viewing platforms and the famous Parks Canada red Adirondack chairs.

The trails are well marked and maintained, but hikers should come prepared for the rugged terrain and unpredictable weather. The trails are best hiked from June to September, when the weather is warmer and the bugs are fewer.

The Manito Miikana Trail and the Southern Headland Trail are an excellent choice for hikers looking for a wilderness experience. The trails provide a chance to explore the rugged beauty of Pukaskwa National Park and experience the tranquility and isolation of the backcountry. It’s a wilderness experience that will stay with you for a long time.

If you’re planning a hike in the National Park, be sure to check the park’s website for the latest trail conditions and bring plenty of water, food and proper hiking gear to make for a pleasant trip. And don’t forget your camera, you’ll want to capture the incredible views!
